Schools

These are some of the schools that provide training in the classical and realist traditions. I have personally studied with instructors at some of these institutions, or taken workshops with them. These schools tend to emphasize either sight-size or comparative measurement, along with traditional methods of observation, and academic instruction of the principles of anatomical structure, light and shadow, color theory, and perspective.
Academy of Realist Art
Founded by Fernando Freitas and based in Toronto with an emphasis on sight-size. Students progress through four levels, from two-dimensional copying, to rendering round forms on a flat drawing, painting first in grisaille and then adding color, and finally still life studies.
